Mae Hong Son - North Thailand tour packages

Replace flying from Chiang Mai to Mae hong Son, explore remoted hilltribes villages , Lisu and karen Long necks tribe in their natural surroundings & discover the best of the real Thailand..

Private tour: Departure every day from Chiang Mai

Day  1
CHIANG MAI - LISU TRIBE (-/Lunch/Diner)
Early pick up from your hotel in Chiang Mai. The Lisu tribe is one of the smaller tribes home to northern Thailand. You will support them by visiting the community-based, award winning Lisu Lodge, aimed at teaching visitors about the Lisu culture and daily life, and help the local people learn about modernization and benefit from tourism.
The Lisu have settled in this part of Thailand after having migrated down from Tibet through southern China and Burma.
Guided by a Lisu villager you will walk you through the village to visit the Ton Lung temple and the herb garden. You will have a cup of tea with the shaman or ‘miracle doctor’ at his house to learn about his life, his curing rites and the Lisu traditions.
A tasty lunch is served at the lodge. In the small cultural centre you will find many local tools and household items used by both Lisu and Akha people. You will select an activity for the afternoon; a guided bike tour, a steam bath, a massage or an ox-card ride through the farmlands nearby.
Dinner is served and you will enjoy a local performance under a million stars.
Overnight in the basic but well maintained lodge.

Day  2
LISU TRIBE - MAE HONG SON (Breakfast/Lunch/-)
Wake up with the sounds of the village and hit the road west and discover more faces of the real Thailand.
A big favorite by those who know it is the little traveled North West, an area of evergreen jungle, winding roads with far views and colorful mountain tribes living scattered across this area along the rivers and streams.
Many of these tribes do not originate from Thailand and live in Burma and Laos too, the current borders did not yet exist when their ancestors came down from China and settled here.
The lime stone outcrops are soft and easy to form cave systems. You will explore Tham lod, the fish cave after the giant carp splashing around.
On foot and by raft on the gentle stream you might understand better why people can be tempted to live in caves.
Mae Hong Son can feel like the end of the road, and actually also is. There are no official border crossing here, and those coming and going do so by crossing the rivers and mountains by themselves. Climbing up to the golden pagoda in the Burmese style overlooking the surrounding mountains and valley, shows you a sea of green with the occasional column of smoke where a small community may have settled.
Overnight at Mae Hong Son

Day  3
MAE HONG SON (Breakfast/Lunch/-)
This is one of those towns you feel you could stay forever. There is a calm that makes you lazy without being bored. Simply sitting on the road side with a cup of locally brewed coffee may suddenly reveal a couple of hill tribe women, babies strapped to their backs, walking in brisk peace to the town clinic.
Colorful traditional costumes and woven baskets are easy to spot, especially on the morning market, and you could even see a Longneck Karen woman shopping for cooking oil or a shovel.
You will go into the forest by boat to visit a Karen community and learn why these women wear all those copper bracelets around their necks that seems to elevate their heads. Learning and understanding how all these originally nomadic tribes moved around the jungle and what their position is today in Thailand and Burma will be explained and makes an impressive story.
The end of the afternoon is at leisure to wander around the picturesque lake in the town centre where sometimes a little night market is set up in front of the beautiful little temple. The cool climate is a nice change from the heat and you may want to dine outside tonight.
Overnight at Mae Hong Son

Day  4
MAE HONG SON - CHIANG MAI (Breakfast/Lunch/-)
Be prepared for some driving today, not so much in kilometers but in hours. The winding road follows generally the chocolate colored rivers which form the border between Thailand and Burma. This is rugged terrain where you may stumble upon a logger with his working elephant or a pick-up filled with cheering hill tribe women coming from the market. Several stops will show you vistas and local markets. Conditions permitting you will drive the back roads via Mae Chaem through the hills, east back to Chiang Mai. The tour ends at your booked hotel in Chiang Mai, or the local airport or railway station.
