MOGOK - THE RUBY
LAND 3 Days / 2 Nights (EMR/MGK)

DAY 1 :
Mandalay-Mogok (Lunch, Dinner)
Leave Mandalay after an early breakfast for a seven hour journey
to Mogok stopping for lunch in the village of Lat Pan before
taking the twisting roads leading up to Mogok. Located 200km
northeast of Mandalay, Mogok is 1,170m above sea level and is
built around a beautiful lake reflecting the hilly surroundings.
Mogok is known for its world famous rubies described in Joseph
Kessel novel 'The Valley of the Rubies'. Locally the area is known
as the 'Ruby Land' and most of Mogok's 200,000 inhabitants are
working in the gem business either in the mines, cutting and
polishing or selling gemstones. On arrival in Mogok, enjoy a
scenic panorama of the town, lake and surrounding hills from
Kyeenitaung viewpoint. Dinner and overnight in Mogok.

DAY 2 :
Mogok (B, L, D)
After breakfast enjoy a Morning visit to the colourful Aung
Chantha Market followed by a full day exploration of the
different ruby mines. Alluvial limestone gravels are the source
and deposits are exploited using various methods including
digging, tunnelling and panning. Continue sightseeing with a
visit to a local gem market. After lunch, visit a lapidary
workshop, goldsmith and gem souvenir shops and then continue to
Bamon village, home of the Palaung ethnic minority. Enjoy the
sunset over Mogok from Chanthagyi Pagoda before dinner and
overnight in Mogok.
DAY 3 :
Mogok-Mandalay (B)
Leave Mogok after breakfast to return to Mandalay stopping en
route to watch gold panning at Chang Gyi village. After a lunch
break at Lat Pan visit a local alcohol factory near Mataya
arriving back in Mandalay in the afternoon.
