4 days Naadam Games in Arburd Sands

Itinerary (Ulaaanbaatar - Arburd Sands - Ulaaanbaatar)

Surprisingly near the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar , the Gobi gradually begins to appear. We will travel south over vast steppe lands to Arburd Sands, where this weekend one of Mongolia's famous horse trainers will be celebrated by his family and community. Choidog is the patriarch and a famous horse trainer,and he was awarded a presidential horse training title in February, and the community is now going the celebrate this organizing a local Naadam.

Westerners perceive the Gobi as a desert but actually most of it is a semi desert steppe. We will trek in an area where the steppes give way to sandy subsoil and in an area where there is a 20 km long sand dune. All herdsmen lead a traditional way of life here.

This journey is vehicle supported and we will stay at Arburd Sands Ger Camp in the northern Gobi . You may try to ride camel or rent a riding horse for some time.

Day 1

Ulaaanbataar - Arburd Sands (-/Lunch/Diner)
A.m. Drive out of Ulaanbaatar for some 4 hours to the south over the treeless steppes to Bayan Önjuul soum and Arburd Sands. Picnic lunch. We are likely to meet some nomads. This area is the core area for the steppe nomads and they are very good horse trainers. Celebrations prior to the Naadam may already be going. Hike into the sand dunes. Perhaps try ride a camel. Overnight at Arburd Sands Ger Camp.

Day 2

Arburd Sands - Naadam Games (Breakfast/Lunch/Diner)
Choidog, the patriarch of one of the major families of the area have been awarded the title Manlai Uyach by the president of Mongolia during Tsaagan Sar (Mongolian New Year in February). It is the 2 nd most important title given to horse trainers, and Choidog is the first one to receive it in his community. Only 34 horse trainers have got it to date, and 4 have the highest, which is Sod Manlai Uyach. A site on the steppes has been chosen for the venue. There will be horse races and wrestling, and local people will arrive from 3-5 soums (communities) around the area. There will be two horse races, one for foals and one for adult horses. There will also be ankle bone games. Return to Arburd Sands Ger Camp.

Day 3

Zorgol Hairhan Mountain (Breakfast/Lunch/Diner)
Drive 35km to Zorgol Hairhan Mountains . These are rock formations standing out vertically from the steppes. Considered sacred by the locals they are subject to veneration. We hike around the area, and with some luck may spot Argali Sheep (Ovis ammon) the world's largest wild sheep and Siberian Ibex (Capra sibirica). More nomads live here.

Day 4

Arburd Sands - Ulaaan Bataar (Breakfast/-/-)
A.m. drive back to Ulaanbaatar . On the way we will visit the Bogd Uul Biosphere Reserve and the site of the ruins of Manzshir monastery. This is the southernmost taiga forest of the area, and we will get up into the hills to experience some nice forests. Red deer (Cervus elaphus) may usually be seen here. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon. Will drive you to your hotel. End of services.
