Itinerary (Sandakan - Gomantong Cave -Sukau (Kinabatangan River) - Oxbow Lake- Sepilok orang utans - Sepilok night walk -Sandakan )

SANDAKAN Situated by a beautiful, natural deepwater bay, Sandakan was formerly the administrative capital of British North Borneo. At one time, timber was the major export but this is now supplanted by the oil palm industry. With world famous Sepilok, the first Orang Utan Sanctuary, Sandakan plays host to nature lovers who can also visit Selingan, one of the Turtle Islands 1 hours away from the town as well as Sukau, in the upper reaches of the Kinabatangan River where primates, especially the proboscis monkeys (endemic only to Borneo) are easily sighted.

Day 1

Sandakan -Gomantong Cave -Sukau (Kinabatangan River) -

Meet upon arrival on MH2042 ETA 0740hrs and proceed for 2.5 hours drive to Gomantong cave. Upon arrival, take a 15 minutes walk to the cave, see the unique limestone vegetation and lowland forest, here you can observe birds and primates. Explore one of the fascinating caves in Sabah, the cave is home to the millions of bats and swiftlets. The swiftlets nest are collected for the famous Chinese edible bird’s nest soup. After exploring the cave, continue journey to Sukau. Check-in and lunch at Sri Menanggol Cabins. In late afternoon, proceed for river cruise to the Menanggol River a tributary of Kinabatangan River search for wildlife, including the unique Proboscis monkey, hornbills, kingfishers and more. The Kinabtangan Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places in Southeast Asia to observe wildlife. Overnight at Sri Menanggol Cabins.

Day 2

Oxbow Lake - Sepilok Orang Utan -Sepilok Nightwalk
(Breakfast/Lunch/Diner)
6.00am early morning river cruise to the Oxbow lakes. (Oxbow lake was formed by large meanders of the river that have been cut off from the main channel). The trip will take you to see more primates and birds. After morning cruise, return to lodge for breakfast. Return to Sandakan and check-in at Sepilok Resthouse. Then proceed to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Orphaned and injured Orang Utan are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated to return to forest life. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest, a fine showcase of Borneo’s remaining rain forest. Witness the feeding of Orang Utan from a platform.
At 5.30pm begin your night walk with observing the Red Giant flying squirrels getting active, experience the guided walk into the jungle. Observe the activities of the nocturnal insects and mammals in the tropical rainforest. Return to Sepilok Resthouse. Overnight.
