DAY 1 :
Vientiane (-/-/-)
On arrival in Vientiane
(pronounced 'Wieng Chan' by the locals)
transfer to hotel. Then, visit
many interesting wats and lively markets, such as
Pha That Luang - the most important national monument in Laos,
Patuxai - a large monument in the style of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris,
Ho Pha Keo - the former royal temple of the Lao monarchy converted into a museum containing Buddhist sculptures found in Laos,
Wat Si Muang - the temple which contains the city pillar and acts as the home of Vientiane's guardian spirits,
Wat Si Saket - the early Bangkok style tempole containing more than 2,000 silver and ceramic Buddha images, and
Talaat Sao - the Morning Market (actually open all day) selling a wide range of fabrics, jewellery and electronic goods.
Overnight in Vientiane.
DAY 2 :
Luang Prabang (B/-/-)
After breakfast, flight from Vientiane to Luang Prabang,
the ancient capital city of the Lan Xang Kingdom. On arrival transfer to hotel. A city tour including
Wat Xieng Thong - the most beautiful monastery in Luang Prabang, Wat Wisunalat (Vat Visoun) - the oldest operating temple in Luang Prabang,
Wat Mai - once the residence of Phra Sangkharaj (the Patriarch of the Buddhist clergy),
Wat That Luang - contains the ashes of King Sisavang Vong,
and Wat Saen.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.
DAY 3 :
Luang Prabang - Pak Ou Caves - Luang Prabang (B/-/-)
Excursion by boat from Luang Prabang to Pak Ou Caves,
two caves (Tham Thing – lower cave and Tham Phum) located in the steep rock cliff at the confluence of the Mekong River and Ou River. They are full of Buddha images of varying styles, ages and sizes. Continue to Ban Xang Hai, the village was once a 'Jar-Maker Village' and nowadays the community fill the jars (which come from elsewhere) with lao-lao, the local rice whisky.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.
DAY 4 :
Luang Prabang - Kuang Si Waterfalls - Luang Prabang (B/-/-)
Excursion by car to Kuang Si Waterfalls southwest
of Luang Prabang with stops en-route to visit Khmu village with a traditional hydro-rice mill,
Ban Tha Baen. It is possible to walk to the top of the
falls via a steep track and if the weather is good swim in the
clear water at the foot of the falls.
Overnight in Luang Prabang.
DAY 5 :
Luang Prabang (B/-/-)
Visit National Museum located on the banks of the Mekong River. It was constructed as Royal Palace between 1904 and 1909 and today houses the Royal throne of the Lan Xang Kingdom and many other pieces of regalia and religious treasures. Contine to
Phu Si, the temples on the upper slopes. Transfer.
